In my friend group, gin holds a special place in our hearts. My girls and I solidified our relationship in Washington, D.C. as young 20 somethings trying to climb both our respective career ladders and someone’s trifling son. Over way too many happy hours where we lamented over shitty coworkers, horrible bosses and bad sex, we discovered that gin was kind of our thing.
During the weekends, we'd head on mini excursions to check out different gin bars and distilleries in order to get a feel for what we liked. At the time, our go-to cocktail was a classic gin and tonic but, eventually we all fell in love with one perfect drink, the gimlet.
Odds are that if you order a gimlet out at a bar, you’ll likely get asked if you want it made with vodka or gin and since I am your friend (and friends don’t let friends drink vodka), you’ll order it with gin, up with fresh lime juice. No exceptions.
Over the course of a decade, my girls and I have perfected what we like to call, the Rich Auntie Gimlet. It literally only requires three ingredients--gin, freshly squeezed lime juice and simple syrup. There are two cardinal rules when making it.
1. You have to use fresh squeezed lime juice. No that bottled stuff from the grocery store won’t due and fuck no you can’t use Sweet Rose’s Lime. How dare you.
2. It has to be enjoyed with friends.
Here is our beloved recipe. I hope you enjoy it.
